The Outer Hebrides is special place and get lucky with the weather and you’ll forget your in Scotland. In fact you might even think your in Barbados ! With its white sand and turquoise water you’ll be blown away when the sun hits the water . The Outer Hebrides can feel quite remote but its a great place to explore and relax . We spent ten nights traveling from Yorkshire and we felt like we had been away for a month !
Day one – Drove up to Loch Lomond and spent one night then drove to Oban and got the ferry to the isle of Barra . Long crossing though at just short of six hours and it was a rough crossing ! Then kick back for two nights and relax .. Barra was one of my favourite places and I’d recommend staying at Borve campsite right at the side of the Atlantic with amazing sunsets and a beautiful white sand beach walking distance away .
Day four- Take the ferry to the isle of Uist and spend two nights . Uist is very sparce and if the weather isn’t great you can feel a bit stranded at times .. We had 80 mph winds so at times we couldn’t even open the van door and quite a few ferries were cancelled but if the weather is on your side then you could easily spend more time here .
day six- Take the ferry to the isle of Harris and spent three nights . We used this as our base to explore the rest of the the island rather than moving on to different places and spent a few days exploring Harris & Lewis and these are breath taking places ! We could have spent a full week here .
day nine- Take the ferry to the isle of Sky and spend two nights. Although Sky is connected to the main land by the Sky bridge it still feels like an island and there’s plenty to see and do with mountains all around its perfect for walking or mountain biking .
day eleven – drive to Glencoe and spend another two nights . Again there’s plenty to do especially having the Glencoe mountain range at your feet .
What would we do different next time ?
Spend more time on Harris & Lewis.
Wild camp a bit more then you have more freedom on how long you stay at places you really enjoy.
This is a great road trip to do if you want that real sense of adventure where you get back to basics and reconnect with nature . You could easily spend a month doing this trip if your lucky enough to have the time . You can buy a multi leg ticket from CalMac ferries that allows you to island hop so once your the Outer Hebrides the ferry crossing to other islands are no longer than one hour so happy exploring !
